Oberbaumbrücke (toll bridge, 1895-97)
In the 18th century, the wooden bridge demarcated the border between Berlin and Brandenburg. The bridge is designed in North German Brick Gothic, in the style of a city gate, thus reminding of its former function.
Oberbaumbrücke, literally translated, means Upper Tree Bridge. A heavy tree trunk, covered with metal spikes, blocked the river Spree at night to prevent ships to pass the border without paying taxes. (Originally there was a second one, the Lower Tree, on the opposite side of town.)
